This evocative watercolor is a quintessential example of Arthur Trevor Haddon’s mastery of the Orientalist genre. The work depicts a bustling street scene at one of the historic gates leading into the old medina of Fez, Morocco. Haddon brilliantly captures the brilliant, sun-drenched architecture of the city, using the white-washed walls and intricate stone arches as a stage for a lively array of local figures.
The composition is rich in observational detail, from the dappled shadows cast by the midday sun to the rhythmic movement of the crowd. Haddon was celebrated for his ability to translate the atmosphere of Southern Europe and North Africa into a soft, English watercolor tradition, imbuing his scenes with both romanticism and topographic accuracy. This piece serves as a vibrant visual document of early 20th-century Moroccan life.
