Wook-kyung Choi - Composición expresionista abstracta
Detalles
Signed lower right “W.K. Choi” in black pigment.
This dynamic acrylic on canvas is a vibrant testament to the pioneering spirit of Wook-kyung Choi (1940–1985), a key figure who bridged the gap between Korean art and American Abstract Expressionism. The composition is a bold explosion of gesture and color, featuring high-contrast strokes of crimson, cerulean, and emerald green layered over a warm ochre background. Choi’s style is defined by its raw emotional energy and spontaneous brushwork, reflecting her time spent in the United States during the 1960s and 70s, where she was deeply influenced by the New York School.
The work displays a masterful balance between chaotic, dripping impasto and structured geometric fields of color. This juxtaposition creates a sense of profound movement and psychological depth, characteristic of Choi’s search for a personal visual language that transcended national borders. As one of the few prominent female voices in the male-dominated Korean art scene of her time, Choi’s work remains a vital and rare discovery for collectors of global mid-century abstraction.

Wook-kyung Choi was a transformative figure in Korean modern art. After graduating from Seoul National University, she moved to the United States in 1963, attending the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Her exposure to American abstraction allowed her to develop a style that was uniquely hers—fusing the bold, liberated brushstrokes of Western Expressionism with a sensibility rooted in her Korean heritage.
Her works are celebrated for their unapologetic intensity and are currently held in major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Korea.
