A.A. Almelkar – Musicians
Details
Signed lower left in Marathi and dated “78”.
This vibrant mixed media work on paper is a quintessential example of the “Musician Series” by the distinguished Indian painter Abdul Rahim Appabhai Almelkar (1920–1982). Known for his unique blend of traditional Indian themes and modernist techniques, Almelkar here depicts two figures — a veena player and a drummer — under a stylized banana tree. The work is characterized by the artist’s signature bold outlines, rhythmic decorative patterns, and a palette rooted in Indian folklore and rural life. A prominent figure in the post-independence art scene, Almelkar’s work in this series reflects his deep fascination with the dynamism of Indian performing arts.
