Details

Signed at the upper center in red pigment with a stylized, calligraphic flourish.

In this work, Marwan explores one of his most potent and haunting motifs—the image of the doll or marionette. Rather than a living person, the viewer is presented with a figure of simplified, almost mechanical features. In the artist’s body of work, this symbol represents alienation, the fragility of human existence, and a loss of agency often associated with the experience of exile and political upheaval.

The figure is rendered in a restless, expressive manner: vibrant patches of crimson and ochre on the face contrast sharply with a pale, atmospheric background. The loose, gestural brushwork creates an effect where the form appears to be “dissolving,” transforming the doll into an emotional landscape. The artist’s signature, placed prominently at the top center in bold red oil paint, becomes an integral part of the composition, asserting his presence within this intimate and melancholic space.

Marwan Kassab-Bachi: Expressing the Human Condition Through Syrian-German Expressionism
Syrian 1934-2016

Marwan Kassab-Bachi, known simply as Marwan, was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1934 and became a prominent figure in contemporary expressionist painting, renowned for his haunting, introspective portraits. After studying Arabic literature at the University of Damascus, Marwan moved to Berlin in 1957 to pursue art at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste, where he was deeply influenced by German expressionism and the works of artists like Edvard Munch and Francis Bacon.

Marwan’s signature style emerged through his series of “Heads”, where distorted, layered faces served as metaphors for psychological depth, existential struggle, and the broader human condition. His work often reflected the tensions of identity and exile, bridging his Syrian roots with European artistic traditions. As a professor at his alma mater, Marwan influenced a generation of artists, fostering a dialogue between Middle Eastern and Western art. His powerful, emotive paintings continue to resonate as profound explorations of humanity’s inner landscapes.
