Mubin Orhon – Abstract Composition in Blue, 1957
Details
Signed and dated lower right “Mubin 57”; further signed, titled, and dated “Mubin Orhon, Paris, 1957” on the reverse of the canvas.
This luminous oil on canvas is a seminal work by Mübin Orhon (1924–1981), created during his most influential years in Paris. The painting is a masterclass in the Lyrical Abstraction movement, featuring a swirling, ethereal vortex of cerulean, azure, and pale lavender tones. Orhon’s technique here is profoundly atmospheric; the rhythmic, circular brushstrokes create a sense of infinite depth and movement, as if the viewer is gazing into a cosmic or oceanic expanse. Small, delicate drips of pigment add a raw, process-oriented energy to the otherwise serene and meditative surface.
Created in 1957, this work captures the essence of the “Ecole de Paris” (School of Paris), where Orhon stood alongside other great abstract masters. His ability to evoke intense emotion through the pure manipulation of color and light is perfectly realized in this monochromatic exploration. The painting represents a pivotal moment in Orhon’s career when he moved toward a more spiritual, light-infused abstraction that would define his legacy as one of Turkey’s most important modern artists.
