48: Attributed to Martiros Saryan – In the Mountains, 1967
Details
Signed lower left “М. Сарьян 1967”; inscribed on the verso “Мартирос Сарьян 1967 В горах” (Martiros Saryan 1967, In the Mountains).
Attributed to Martiros Saryan, In the Mountains (1967) is full of the lyricism and clarity that is the hallmark of Saryan’s Armenia. Hills roll out beneath a crystal sky, their surfaces built in great planes of ochre, rose and turquoise – colours that vibrate with sunlight. Even in attribution the composition has the serenity of Saryan’s realism, where every line breathes the Caucasus.
Oil on canvas, the painting is a marriage of structure and atmosphere. The brushwork is smooth and expressive, a rhythm of movement across the surface. Saryan’s sensitivity to temperature and tone turns the landscape into a symphony of light and air – a celebration of life and belonging.
Whether by the artist himself or in his circle In the Mountains is the philosophy of Saryan’s art: to see the divine in nature’s simplicity and to translate the world into pure colour.
