Signed lower right “Meunier.

Georges Meunier’s Landscape with Willow is a lovely portrait of rural France at the turn of the century — a moment where stillness and life coexist under a clear spring sky. The painting captures the immediacy of light as it moves across the meadows and tree tops, the air full of the quiet pulse of nature’s renewal.

Oil on panel, the scene is rendered in crisp brushstrokes and subtle modulation of greens and blues. Meunier’s hand is Impressionist: spontaneous, luminous, grounded. Each color passage builds a living texture, the leaves rustling, the wind humming through the branches.

More than a landscape, Landscape with Willow is a meditation on impermanence — a celebration of the everyday beauty Impressionism sought to freeze. Through the solitary willow, Meunier conveys strength and elegance, turning a common countryside subject into a quiet poem of light and time.

Georges Meunier
Georges Meunier
French 1869-1942

Georges Meunier was a Parisian painter, illustrator, and poster artist celebrated for his refined contribution to the Belle Époque visual culture. A student of Jules Chéret, Meunier became one of the key figures of the affiche artistique movement that transformed advertising into fine art at the turn of the 20th century. His lithographs for famous Parisian venues and brands — from Chocolat Menier to Job Cigarettes — combined dynamic composition, elegance, and an unmistakable sense of Parisian charm.

Beyond his poster work, Meunier developed a painterly style rooted in colour harmony and poetic observation. His landscapes and figurative compositions reveal a quieter, more contemplative vision — the sensibility of an artist who had mastered the balance between the decorative and the emotional. Today, Meunier’s works stand as vivid reflections of a golden age in French art, capturing both the optimism and sophistication of fin-de-siècle Paris.
