35: Jane Peterson — View of Istanbul
Details
Signed lower left “Jane Peterson”.
Jane Peterson’s View of Istanbul is a splashy celebration of the Bosphorus in her American impressionist/post-impressionist style. The painting is big and bold – domes and minarets rising up out of the water, reflections dissolving into blues and golds. It’s not a topographical view, but a view of light, rhythm and the living pulse of the city between two continents.
Oil on canvas, the painting shows Peterson’s mastery of composition. The brushwork is immediate, as if she painted it en plein air, but the tones are harmonious, a sign of a disciplined eye. She captures the architecture as solidity and atmosphere – monumental forms softened by distance and sun.
In View of Istanbul Peterson is fascinated by the exotic and the universal – a meeting of cultures, colors and histories seen through her modernist eyes. The painting is both travelogue and artist’s statement – a glowing record of a city that in her hands is eternal.
