Attr. to Maria Vieira Da Silva – Untitled
Details
Signed lower right “Vieira da Silva.”
This intricate watercolor on paper is a captivating example of the structural complexity and rhythmic abstraction associated with Maria Elena Vieira Da Silva. The composition features a dense, labyrinthine network of horizontal and vertical strokes, creating a sense of fragmented architectural space and urban energy. Through a sophisticated palette of cerulean, indigo, and slate grays, punctuated by strategic accents of primary red and ochre, the work explores the tension between depth and surface.
A key figure of the School of Paris, Vieira Da Silva was renowned for her ability to transform memories of cityscapes into poetic, semi-abstract grids. This piece demonstrates that signature “spatialism,” where short, staccato brushstrokes build a flickering perspective that draws the viewer into a shimmering, multifaceted environment. The fluid nature of the watercolor medium adds a layer of transparency and light to the geometric rigor of the “perspective of the mind” for which she is celebrated.
Provenance
Private Collection, Spain.
Condition
The work is in good overall condition, with the watercolor pigments remaining vibrant and well-defined across the sheet. The paper support shows light, age-appropriate toning primarily at the extreme edges, and the verso exhibits a few scattered pigment smudges and minor surface marks that are typical of the artistic process and do not affect the integrity of the primary composition on the front. Unframed.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was one of the most important female voices of 20th century abstraction. Her intricate, labyrinthine paintings blur the lines between space, memory and perception. Born in Lisbon and later based in Paris, she studied with Fernand Léger and Roger Bissière, absorbing Cubism and Constructivism while creating her own visual language. Her canvases – networks of lines, grids and luminous planes – are both architectural and psychological, turning perspective into emotion.
Vieira da Silva’s work is a lifelong meditation on order and chaos, often seen as metaphors for displacement and identity. Having lived through exile during World War II, she put into her work the feeling of searching – for direction, for meaning, for home. Her paintings are in major museums around the world and are a combination of intellectual rigour and lyrical intuition, making her one of the leading European abstractionists of the post-war period.
