Details

Unsigned.

This dynamic and dramatic oil painting depicts the biblical scene of the Massacre of the Innocents, set against an elaborate backdrop of ideal palace architecture. The composition is populated with numerous figures in a high-tension scene, while the right third of the work reveals a view through a large archway toward a city situated on an elevated terrain. This work reflects the style associated with Ottmar Elliger the Younger, a Dutch artist of the period.
