Georges Berger: Montmartre in a Nervous Line
Georges Berger (1908–1976), the Norman-born Expressionist of the Butte and friend of Gen Paul, who painted the markets, steps and quays of Paris in a slashing, calligraphic hand; his Street Market in Montmartre is at auction with Aurora & Athena.
Seen from above, the street market is a swarm of dashes: violet, red and black for the shoppers, green and orange for the awnings, the tall grey house-fronts dissolving into a web of strokes. Nothing stands still. That restlessness is the signature of Georges Berger (1908–1976), and his Street Market in Montmartre is lot 16 of our Maestros modernos: Arte del siglo XX ¡Oferta!.

A Norman on the Butte
Berger was born in Normandy in 1908 and made his life in Montmartre, among the painters of the Butte. There he became a close friend of Gen Paul, the great Expressionist of the quarter, and the two shared streets, cafés and models. Gen Paul’s manner, the picture drawn as much as painted, the colour breaking through a grey ground in sudden bursts, left its mark on Berger’s own, without turning him into a copyist: his line is quicker and lighter, his palette sparer.
Paris, Honfleur and the quays
He was above all a landscape painter of the city: the steps and windmills of Montmartre, the quays of the Seine with their bouquinistes, markets and squares in rain and sun. The port of Honfleur and the Norman coast of his childhood, still lifes and occasional portraits complete the picture, always with the same hurried, expressive touch. He exhibited in the Paris salons and galleries of the post-war years and died in 1976.
Berger at auction
Long collected in France, his work now sells internationally alongside that of the Montmartre school, with Paris street and market scenes the most in demand. Canvases of this size with the paint layer intact, as here, are the ones to look for. More on his página de artista.
