A pyramid that floats, with a harpist in a boat at its foot and a crowd of animal-headed figures climbing its tiers: Frantz Zéphirin‘s Torre de Babel, acrylic on board, 77.5 × 61 cm, is in our gallery at 5,000 €. Next to it hangs Préfète Duffaut‘s Le Bateau Infini of 1980, a Vodou ceremony aboard a ship sailing past one of his imaginary cities, at 2,900 €. Both are by painters whose names are now read out in the same breath as Héctor Hipólito, the Centre d’Art master whose canvases passed $365,000 at Christie’s. This guide explains how the three fit together, what their work sells for, and what it actually costs to take one of ours home.

Why Haitian painting is no longer cheap

In 2022 Christie’s New York sold Hyppolite’s Damballah La Flambeau, a canvas of about 1947, for $365,400, against a high estimate of $250,000. Artnet counted nine Hyppolite paintings over $100,000 at auction since 2020 (artnet News). Doyle took Fête des Morts to $203,700 in March 2024 on an estimate of $80,000–120,000 (Doyle), and in October 2025 Material Culture in Philadelphia reported $355,000 for Purification Ceremony, a result circulated by the Haitian Art Society rather than the big price databases, so treat it as reported rather than audited.

Those are prices for a painter who worked with house paint and chicken feathers. The reason is scarcity: Hyppolite painted for three years, from the day the Centre d’Art brought him from Saint-Marc to Port-au-Prince in 1945 to his death in June 1948, and most of what he made is in museums or has stayed inside Haitian families. The rest of the Centre d’Art generation is where a collector can still buy, and that is where Duffaut comes in.

Hector Hyppolite, the painter the others are measured against

Hyppolite was born in Saint-Marc in 1894, a third-generation Vodou priest who earned his living as a house painter and cobbler. The Centre d’Art, opened in Port-au-Prince in 1944 by the American watercolourist DeWitt Peters, brought him to the capital in 1945; André Breton bought several of his pictures on a visit in the winter of 1945–46 and wrote about him, and in 1947 his work went to the UNESCO exhibition in Paris. Spirits, sirens, ceremonies and flowers, painted flat and frontal with no training to get in the way: that vocabulary is the one every later Haitian painter either continued or argued with. We wrote a fuller profile in Héctor Hyppolite: El visionario que llevó el vudú al lienzo.

Préfète Duffaut and the imaginary city

Préfète Duffaut, Le Bateau Infini, 1980, oil on canvas, 61 × 92 cm · 2,900 € · available at Aurora & Athena

Préfète Duffaut (1923–2012) was the boat-builder’s son from Cyvadier, near Jacmel, who joined the Centre d’Art in 1948 and in 1950–51 was one of five painters, with Philomé Obin, Castera Bazile, Rigaud Benoît and Wilson Bigaud, commissioned to paint the murals of the Cathédrale Sainte-Trinité in Port-au-Prince. His two panels, The Temptation of Christ y The Processional Road, were lost with the cathedral in the 2010 earthquake. What survives everywhere else is his invention, the ville imaginaire: a hillside town of patchwork houses and winding stairs, half Jacmel and half vision, usually with boats in the bay. The Museum of Modern Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Figge and the New Orleans Museum of Art hold his work.

Nuestra Le Bateau Infini is the whole Duffaut repertoire in one canvas: a Vodou ceremony on the deck of a wooden ship, a serpent coiled on the mast, cobwebs in the rigging, two colossal carved heads flanking a looping bay lined with a procession, and the imaginary city on the hill behind, linked by a bridge. It is signed and dated ‘Préfète Duffaut 80’, oil on canvas, 61 × 92 cm, framed to 68.5 × 99 cm. The price is 2,900 €.

Frantz Zéphirin, the living name

Frantz Zéphirin was born in Cap-Haïtien in 1968 and grew up watching his uncle Antoine Obin paint, then left the orderly Cap-Haïtien manner behind for something of his own: human bodies with animal heads, dense crowds, history and Vodou in the same frame. He calls himself a “historic animalist”. He took the gold medal at the Third Biennial of Caribbean and Central American Painting in 1996, two of his paintings toured the United States in Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou in 1997–98, the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore has shown him, and in 2010 Smithsonian Magazine commissioned a painting from him after the earthquake and auctioned it for the Smithsonian’s recovery project in Haiti (Material Culture, Indigo Arts).

Torre de Babel has a provenance you can follow: the collection of Yvonne and Glenn Stokes in the United States, sold at Icon Fine Arts’ Stokes Haitian Art Auction on 22 March 2026 as lot 177, then a private collection in Portugal, then us. Acrylic on board, 77.5 × 61 cm, signed lower right, framed to 81 × 65.5 cm. The price is 5,000 €.

What a Haitian painting costs, in practice

The two tiers are far apart. Hyppolite and the first Centre d’Art generation now trade in six figures when a good picture surfaces at a New York house. Duffaut, with a career of sixty years and a large output, is affordable: price trackers put the median of his auction results in the hundreds of dollars and the top around $5,500 (Appraisily), while the specialist dealers in Haitian art list large, early or cathedral-period canvases at $7,500 to $25,000. Size, date and subject decide where a given canvas falls; a signed and dated 1980 ceremony scene with the imaginary city is a mid-career picture with everything in it. Zéphirin is a living artist sold mainly through galleries, so the public auction trail is thinner and his best prices are set in Port-au-Prince and Miami rather than on the databases.
