Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was one of the most important female voices of 20th century abstraction. Her intricate, labyrinthine paintings blur the lines between space, memory and perception. Born in Lisbon and later based in Paris, she studied with Fernand Léger and Roger Bissière, absorbing Cubism and Constructivism while creating her own visual language. Her canvases – networks of lines, grids and luminous planes – are both architectural and psychological, turning perspective into emotion.

Vieira da Silva’s work is a lifelong meditation on order and chaos, often seen as metaphors for displacement and identity. Having lived through exile during World War II, she put into her work the feeling of searching – for direction, for meaning, for home. Her paintings are in major museums around the world and are a combination of intellectual rigour and lyrical intuition, making her one of the leading European abstractionists of the post-war period.
