Walasse Ting (1929–2010) was a captivating Chinese-American visual artist and poet whose work seamlessly bridged the gap between traditional Chinese ink brushwork and Western avant-garde movements. Born in Shanghai, he briefly studied at the Shanghai Art Academy before moving to Paris in 1952. There, he became closely associated with the avant-garde CoBrA group, forging lasting friendships with artists like Karel Appel and Asger Jorn. In 1958, Ting relocated to New York, where he was profoundly influenced by the explosive energy of Abstract Expressionism and the bold aesthetics of the emerging Pop Art scene, which ultimately shaped his distinct and vibrant artistic voice.

Renowned for his kaleidoscopic palette and unabashedly sensual subject matter, Ting celebrated the beauty of life through dynamic depictions of women, lush flora, cats, and exotic birds. His masterful technique combined the fluidity of traditional Asian calligraphy with striking, fluorescent acrylics, resulting in compositions that radiate joy and vitality. Throughout his prolific career, he garnered widespread international acclaim, including a Guggenheim Fellowship.
