This evocative oil painting by the celebrated artist Théo Tobiasse showcases a rich, textured “still life with a teapot” composition. The work is characterized by Tobiasse’s signature layered application of paint, creating a complex, multi-dimensional surface that invites deep visual exploration. The warm, earthy palette, punctuated by deep reds and highlights, imbues the scene with an intimate, melancholic, and timeless atmosphere.

Tobiasse’s unique technique often blends figurative elements with abstract textures, and this piece is a sophisticated example of his mid-1970s period. It serves as a striking representation of his ability to transform a commonplace domestic subject into a profound, narrative-driven artistic statement, making it a compelling addition for any fine art collector.

Portrait of the renowned expressionist artist Théo Tobiasse, whose original masterpieces are for sale at Aurora & Athena gallery

Théo Tobiasse

French (1927-2012)

Théo Tobiasse was born in Jaffa to Lithuanian-Jewish parents, but his family relocated to Paris when he was a young child. His early life was profoundly shaped by the trauma of World War II; during the Nazi occupation of Paris, he and his family spent two grueling years hidden in a small apartment to survive. This period of intense isolation, fear, and introspection deeply impacted his worldview and later fueled his artistic drive to capture the enduring spirit of his heritage. After the war, Tobiasse worked initially as a commercial designer in Nice before fully dedicating himself to fine art in the early 1960s. He quickly established himself as a significant and highly original figure in contemporary expressionism on the French Riviera.

Tobiasse’s mesmerizing oeuvre is a visual diary heavily steeped in themes of exile, biblical narratives, childhood memory, and the sensual mystery of the female form. His signature style is incredibly visceral, characterized by heavily textured impasto, rich and emotive color palettes, and the frequent integration of text—often in French, English, or Hebrew—directly onto the canvas. These textual fragments act as poetic echoes of his past, transforming his mixed-media compositions into profound storytelling vehicles. Today, his deeply personal and culturally resonant masterpieces are celebrated globally and are held in prestigious international museum and private collections.
