A Self-Taught Painter in Colonial Hanoi

Nang Hien Le — also known by the pseudonym Zuy Nhat — was born in 1921 into a middle-class Confucian family in the Hang Buom quarter of Hanoi, then under French colonial rule. By 1953 he’d opened his own studio at 76 Hang Dau and was working as an illustrator for Hanoi publishers and newspapers — Phong Hoa, Tia Sang, Van Hong Thinh — producing drawings of Liberation Day, workers’ lives, national reunification and portraits of young Hanoi women that fed directly into his later silk paintings.
