Théodore Lévigne: The Lyon School Rediscovered

A stone bridge, poplars and willows along the bank, a long violet mountain closing the view under a sky of grey cloud, every plane given its own cool tone. This is the Lyon school at its most exact, and its painter, Théodore Lévigne (1848–1912), is being rediscovered by the French auction houses after decades of neglect. The Laurier d’Or at fifteen

Lévigne was born in Noirétable, in the Forez hills, on 17 November 1848, the son of a bootmaker, and grew up in the Saint-Jean quarter of Lyon after the family moved there in 1856. He entered the Lyon École des Beaux-Arts at twelve and at fifteen won its highest award, the Laurier d’Or. A scholarship from the city took him to Paris and the studios of Cabanel and Gérôme; disappointed by both, he abandoned their classes, lost his stipend, and returned to Lyon, where the prefecture restored it in 1867 on the strength of his contrition.

A painter of everything

He spent the rest of his career in Lyon, exhibiting at the Lyon and Paris Salons and painting whatever was asked of him: portraits, still lifes, hunting and military scenes, genre pictures of Lyonnais life. His reputation rests on the landscapes, the misty waterways and wintry half-tones of the Lyon countryside, the Loire, the Dauphiné and the Bugey, and by contrast the sunlit Mediterranean coast. The decorations he painted for the Peillard estate near Noirétable have been the subject of a recent study. He died in Lyon on 11 November 1912.

Why the market is catching up

Lévigne is represented in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and the museums of Roanne and Saint-Étienne, and the auction houses have begun to present him as a rediscovery, with the landscapes leading.
