Founded in 1947 by the visionary Italian-Argentine artist Lucio Fontana, Spatialism is a revolutionary post-war movement that shattered the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture. Driven by the rapid advancements in science, technology, and space exploration, Spatialist artists sought to transcend the flat, two-dimensional surface of the canvas.
The movement is most famously characterized by Fontana’s iconic tagli (slashes) and buchi (holes). By physically puncturing or cutting the canvas, artists transformed the artwork from a mere surface into a dynamic, three-dimensional object, inviting actual space and light to interact with the piece. This radical approach redefined the relationship between the artwork, the viewer, and the surrounding environment, merging time and space into a single conceptual gesture.
