Pioneer of the Nanyang Style
Cheong Soo Pieng (1917–1983) was a master painter and a central figure in the development of Modern art in Singapore, celebrated as a founding pioneer of the iconic Nanyang style. Born in Xiamen, China, he received artistic training at the Xiamen Academy of Fine Arts and the Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai before relocating to Singapore in 1946. Blending Western Post-Impressionist and Cubist techniques with traditional Chinese ink painting and Southeast Asian motifs, Cheong created a groundbreaking visual synthesis that redefined modern Asian art.
Renowned for his iconic depictions of Southeast Asian figures with elongated limbs, almond-shaped eyes, and serene grace, Cheong constantly experimented with medium and form, ranging from oils and Chinese ink to relief sculptures and mixed media. His historic trip to Bali in 1952 with fellow Nanyang artists became a pivotal moment in regional art history, inspiring decades of rich, culturally vibrant output. Today, Cheong Soo Pieng’s masterpieces are housed in prestigious museum collections worldwide and remain among the most highly sought-after Asian modernist artworks at international auctions.
