This expressive charcoal drawing by artist Daniel Selepe, created in 1986, captures the stylized figure of a musician playing the guitar. The work utilizes the rich, dark tones of charcoal to delineate the forms, creating a rhythmic and emotive composition that emphasizes the connection between the musician and their instrument.

Through bold, flowing strokes and soft blending, Selepe conveys a sense of movement and introspection in this portrait. Daniel Selepe

South African

Daniel Selepe is a South African figurative artist working in Cape Town. Largely self-taught, he was mentored by the Cape painter Hendrik Cloete, in whose Wynberg studio he worked for six years.

Charcoal and pastel are his preferred media. His drawings show people in quiet, everyday moments, most often musicians absorbed in their instruments, built from flowing strokes and soft blending. His work has been reproduced on cards by Clifton Publications in Cape Town and appears regularly at South African auctions. Published sources differ on his year of birth (1946 or 1953).
