Hector Hyppolite’s Woman’s Figure is the mystical essence of the artist’s work — sacred intuition and human feeling. Painted with directness and force the figure emerges from a field of ochres, blues and greens, her shape outlined in rhythmic brushstrokes that vibrate with spiritual energy. Hyppolite turns the ordinary into the divine, the composition is full of devotion and mystery beyond the visible.
Oil on board. The artist’s instinctive use of color and composition. Hyppolite’s surfaces are tactile, often made with improvised tools and household brushes, immediate and deep. Here he combines Haitian folk tradition with modernist awareness of form, an image that is as symbolic as it is sensual.

Can I see the condition report, more photographs or the work itself?
A condition report with ultraviolet photographs is prepared on request, normally within two working days; the condition summary on this page is examined in-house and is not a conservator’s report. Further photographs of any detail, the reverse or the frame are sent on request. The work can be examined in our Barcelona showroom by appointment before the sale, and you are welcome to send your own conservator or specialist.

(1894-1948)
Hector Hyppolite was a self taught painter and one of the most important figures in Haitian art. A former houngan, or Vodou priest, Hyppolite put spiritual symbolism and imagination into his paintings, transforming divine visions and local folklore into visual stories. He used simple materials – chicken feathers and household paint – to create raw and lyrical works that capture the essence of Haitian culture.
Discovered and promoted by André Breton and the Surrealists, Hyppolite became the embodiment of unbridled creativity, unbound by academic rules. His colorful compositions, full of gods, spirits and everyday life, merge mysticism with modernism, Haiti’s voice on the global scene. Although his career was short, Hyppolite’s legacy remains as a proof of intuition, spiritual depth and the power of color.
