A Raza at auction now starts in the hundreds of thousands and his record runs into the millions of dollars. Below that tier, where the Indian market is actually being built, prices look like this: a 120 × 89.5 cm mixed-media canvas by Ravi Mandlik, Composition n°06 of 1999, for 1,600 €; a 1993 oil by Prabha Shah, Stones and Clouds, for 800 €; and a watercolour by Gurcharan Singh, Mother’s Child I, for 4,200 €. All three are in our gallery in Barcelona. This is what they are, where the painters stand, and what the numbers mean.

The two Indian markets

Indian modern art has had a decade of records: the Progressive Artists’ Group names, Raza, Husain, Souza, Gaitonde, now sell through Mumbai and New York for sums that put them beside the European post-war painters. That market is closed to anyone without a seven-figure budget. The second market is the generation trained in the state art schools after independence, Sir J.J. in Mumbai, the Government College of Arts in Chandigarh, who exhibit at the Jehangir and the National Gallery of Modern Art, are collected in India, and appear in European auction rooms a few times a year at prices that have not followed their teachers’. That is the market the three works below belong to, and it is the one where a collector with a few thousand euros can still buy a large, signed, exhibited canvas.

Ravi Mandlik, Composition n°06 (1999), 1,600 €

Ravi Mandlik, born in 1960 in Achalpur, Maharashtra, trained at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, took its fellowship in 1984 and its Usha Deshmukh Gold Medal in 1985, and went on to teach there. His exhibitions run from the Jehangir Art Gallery and Tao Art Gallery in Mumbai to Yokohama, Tokyo’s Ueno Royal Museum, London, Brussels and New York; we set out the record in his profile. He paints large abstractions in layered pigment and impasto, and Composition n°06 is a textbook one: 120 × 89.5 cm, framed to 136 × 105.5 cm, ochres, deep reds and yellows worked into a surface that reads like a map. Signed and dated lower right “Ravi Mandlik, 1999” and inscribed with the title on the reverse. For a canvas this size by an artist with this exhibition list, 1,600 € is the price of entry into Indian abstraction.

Prabha Shah, Stones and Clouds (1993), 800 €

Prabha Shah, Stones and Clouds, 1993, oil on canvas, 30.5 × 30.5 cm, Indian modernist painting for sale
Prabha Shah, Stones and Clouds, 1993, oil on canvas, 30.5 × 30.5 cm · 800 € · from Néo Enchères, Paris, June 2025

Prabha Shah, born in 1947 and based in New Delhi, paints Rajasthan: “cities, streets, people, desert depictions fading fast, everything I love and miss”, in her words. The critic Keshav Malik traced her beginnings to the idiom of Rajasthani miniature painting, and the small format of Stones and Clouds, 30.5 × 30.5 cm, framed to 38.5 × 38.5 cm, keeps that intimacy while the subject dissolves into ochres, greens and whites. Oil on canvas, signed “Prabha, 93” lower right and inscribed with the title on the reverse; it came to us from Néo Enchères in Paris in June 2025. Her artist page is the most visited Indian page on our site, and at 800 € this is the least expensive original here.

Gurcharan Singh, Mother’s Child I, 4,200 €

Gurcharan Singh, born in 1949 in Patiala and trained at the Government College of Arts in Chandigarh, made his name with the hardest subject in Indian figurative painting: the people of the red-light districts and barrooms he walked through, painted in harsh reds and blues without judgment. Mother’s Child I is the other side of that work, a watercolour of a mother and child in ochres and golden washes, 73.7 × 55.6 cm, framed to 83.8 × 63.5 cm, signed lower right with the title. It was bought by its previous owner at the Potomack Company’s 20th & 21st Century Paintings & Works on Paper sale in the United States. Watercolour on this scale, with this subject, by a painter known for the opposite, is why it is the most expensive of the three.

What to check before buying Indian modern art in Europe

Three things. First, the signature and the inscription on the reverse: Indian painters of this generation usually title, date and sign the back, and all three works here do. Second, the route out of India: works that were sold at a Western auction or by a Western gallery, as the Shah and the Singh were, come with a paper trail and no export question. Third, the artist’s exhibition record, which for the J.J. and Chandigarh generation is better documented than the auction record, because most of their sales happen in galleries, not salerooms. We print what we can verify on each artist page and say where the trail is thin.

Buying from us is the same for every gallery work: the price on the page is the price, there is no buyer’s premium, Buy now reserves the work for 48 hours while you pay by transfer or card, and shipping is quoted separately with an estimate on the page. All three are catalogued under the artist’s name without qualification and carry our five-year guarantee of authorship.
