A broad avenue lined with pollarded plane trees, their bare winter branches drawn in a tangle of charcoal; tall houses with shutters and balconies, a few strollers, a kiosk and a gate. The scene is the South of France — the Riviera or Marseille, where Édouard Collin spent the second half of his life.
Collin (1906–1983), a pupil of Maurice Denis and Pierre Laurens and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1932, was a founder member of the Salon de Mai and one of the great French poster artists of the mid-century, designer of the famous posters for the liner ‘Liberté’ and the French Line. His drawings show the same sure, economical hand as his graphic work.

Édouard Pierre Collin was born in Meudon on 11 December 1906 and studied under Pierre Laurens and Maurice Denis. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1929 and in 1932 won the Grand Prix de Rome for painting. Between the wars he designed posters for Renault and the Red Cross and sets for the theatre, and he was a founder member of the Salon de Mai, the post-war salon of free expression.
He was a painter, lithographer, engraver, illustrator and poster artist all at once, moving between easel painting and graphic design throughout his life.
In the 1950s Collin created the celebrated posters of the liner ‘Liberté’ and the French Line for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, together with menus, labels, fans and advertisements. He settled in the South, and Marseille, the Provençal towns and the Mediterranean coast became the subjects of his later paintings and drawings.
He died in Marseille on 4 August 1983. His posters are held by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and his paintings by French regional museums.
