Fishing boats — green, red, blue — crowd the quay of Saint-Tropez, their masts drawn against the ochre houses and the famous bell tower of the parish church. The morning light is soft, the reflections broken into ripples, the boats’ names still legible on their bows.

Henri Laulhé (1908–1978) was a French painter of harbours and coasts — the Basque ports of Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Mediterranean and, as here, the Côte d’Azur — who worked in a solid, luminous Post-Impressionist manner. The port of Saint-Tropez, painted by Signac, Marquet, Camoin and Dunoyer de Segonzac before him, gave him his most colourful subject.

Signed ‘H. Laulhé’ at the lower right. Offered unframed.

Provenance

Private Collection, Spain.

Henri Laulhé

French (1908-1978)

Henri Laulhé (1908–1978) was a French painter of the coast. His name is bound to the Basque country — the harbours of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure, the church of Guéthary, the fishing fleet of the Bay of Biscay — and to the ports of the Mediterranean, above all Saint-Tropez, where he painted the quay below the church tower in the tradition of Signac, Marquet and Camoin.

He worked in a solid, luminous Post-Impressionist manner, the paint applied in firm strokes, the colour of hulls and house-fronts set against calm, reflective water.

Laulhé exhibited in the regional salons of the South-West and his paintings pass regularly through the auction rooms of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bayonne. Boats at the quay, church towers above a harbour and the light of the southern coast remain the subjects by which he is known.

His works are held in private collections in France and Spain.
