A Venetian canal at sunset in turquoise, magenta and gold: a gondola glides between ochre palaces, moored boats rock in the foreground and a black tree cuts across the yellow sky. The gouache is applied fast and thick, the drawing in black over the colour, in the lyrical post-Cubist manner Botticini made his own.
Vittorio Botticini (1909–1978), born and died in Brescia, trained at the Cignaroli Academy in Verona and at the Brera, and became one of the most original Lombard painters of the mid-century — a ‘paladin of modernity’, in the words of his monographer Roberto Ferrari — fusing Cézanne and Picasso with the colour of the Venetian tradition. Venice and the lakes were among his favourite motifs.

Vittorio Botticini was born in Brescia on 23 February 1909 and trained between Brescia and Fiumicello under Annibale Scaroni. During his military service in Verona he enrolled at the Cignaroli Academy under Angelo Dall’Oca Bianca, and back in Brescia he worked as a labourer while continuing his studies at the Brera in Milan.
He won the Brozzoni Bequest in 1938, held his first solo exhibition in 1944 and took third prize at the first Premio Brescia in 1952 with ‘Il porticciolo di Desenzano’.
Botticini’s art is a personal reworking of the great movements of the Italian twentieth century: rooted in the Brescian and Venetian tradition of colour, open to Cézanne and Picasso, and resolved in an intense, lyrical post-Cubism — landscapes of the lakes, Venice, still lifes and figures drawn in black over glowing planes of colour. The critic Roberto Ferrari called him a ‘paladin of modernity’.
He died in Brescia on 19 February 1978. His work is in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo and in many Lombard collections.
