A village on fair day: red roofs, a dark-gabled house and a church tower under a sky of broken cloud, with a crowd of villagers in black, blue and red streaming along the road. The paint is laid on with the palette knife in thick, sparkling slabs of colour — D’Anty’s unmistakable technique.
Henry Maurice D’Anty (1910–1998), born in Belleville and trained at the Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian, settled after the war in Montmartre, where he worked in Picasso’s former studio, and exhibited for decades at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps. His knife-painted landscapes, villages and harbours, glowing with impasto, entered many public collections in France and North America.
Signed ‘d’Anty’ at the lower left and again on the reverse.
Very good condition: the thick palette-knife impasto intact across the whole composition, with no cracking, losses or retouching; the canvas taut and unlined, the tacking margins a little frayed at the corners; the atelier authentication label on the reverse; minor rubbing and small losses to the gilding of the frame. A condition report with ultraviolet photographs is prepared on request, normally within two working days; the condition summary on this page is examined in-house and is not a conservator’s report. Further photographs of any detail, the reverse or the frame are sent on request. Henry d’Anty was born Maurice Henry in the Belleville quarter of Paris on 8 September 1910. Raised partly by his grandmother in Saint-Cast during the First World War, he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian, and it was in Brittany that he understood, in his own words, that only painting could render the power of light.
Mobilised and taken prisoner in the Second World War, he settled afterwards in Montmartre, where he worked in the former studio of Pablo Picasso.
A member of the École de Paris, d’Anty exhibited for many years at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps and with Paris and provincial galleries. His landscapes, villages, harbours, flowers and clowns are built with the palette knife in thick, glowing slabs of colour, and his lithographs spread his imagery widely.
By the time of his death at Villejuif on 4 December 1998, museums in France and North America had acquired numerous examples of his work.
