Artwork: 50.5 × 65.5 cm | 19.9 × 25.8 in

Two of Miró’s creatures — one with a round, staring head and a body of black bars, the other a small mask on a curling line — stand in a field of black dots and smudged strokes on warm, tawny paper. The forms are the vocabulary Miró had made his own by the 1950s: heads, eyes, stars and stick-figures set loose on the page with a calligrapher’s freedom.

The lithograph was printed on Arches wove paper and published in Paris by Maeght Éditeur in 1958, the year of Miró’s great ceramic walls for UNESCO. It is signed ‘Miró’ in pencil at the lower right and numbered ’52/100′ in pencil at the lower left.

The sheet is in excellent, fresh condition, the paper bright and the impression strong.

Vintage black-and-white portrait of the renowned Spanish Surrealist artist Joan Miró, whose original masterpieces are for sale at Aurora & Athena gallery

Joan Miró

Catalan (1893-1983)

Born in Barcelona in 1893, Joan Miró emerged as one of the most radical and influential figures of 20th-century art. After early experiments with Fauvism and Cubism in Catalonia, he relocated to Paris in 1920, where he quickly became a foundational pillar of the Surrealist movement. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, famously declared Miró to be “the most Surrealist of us all.” Miró actively rejected the rigid constraints and traditional methods of bourgeois art—a rebellious sentiment he famously described as his desire to “assassinate painting.” Instead, he pioneered automatic drawing and painting techniques, bypassing rational control to tap directly into the raw, uninhibited realm of the subconscious mind and human memory.

His signature visual language is instantly recognizable worldwide, characterized by vivid primary colors, playful biomorphic shapes, and a profound personal symbolism deeply rooted in his Catalan heritage. Working tirelessly across painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking, Miró created a poetic, dreamlike universe that balanced childlike innocence with sophisticated abstraction. Today, his visionary masterpieces are housed in the world’s premier museums and remain fiercely coveted by top-tier collectors.
