Two of Miró’s creatures — one with a round, staring head and a body of black bars, the other a small mask on a curling line — stand in a field of black dots and smudged strokes on warm, tawny paper, in the pared-down, calligraphic vocabulary Miró had made his own by the 1950s.
Catalogued as Petite fille au bois, the lithograph was printed on Arches wove paper and published in Paris by Maeght Éditeur in 1958, the year of Miró’s great ceramic walls for UNESCO. It is signed ‘Miró’ in pencil at the lower right and numbered ’52/100′ in pencil at the lower left, and is recorded as Mourlot 183 in the standard catalogue raisonné of Miró’s lithographs — see Literature.
The sheet is in excellent, fresh condition, the paper bright and the impression strong.

Born in Barcelona in 1893, Joan Miró emerged as one of the most radical and influential figures of 20th-century art. After early experiments with Fauvism and Cubism in Catalonia, he relocated to Paris in 1920, where he quickly became a foundational pillar of the Surrealist movement.
